JoAnne Brown's work depicts rapidly changing effects of light and air at the water's edge. Painted en plein air in and around Wellfleet and the Nauset area of Lower Cape Cod, her paintings are rendered on an intimate scale. Her landscape work spans 14 years of open air painting on Cape Cod. The light in her work and its capture of evanescent atmosphere are influenced by Flemish landscape paintings, Venetian seascapes and the paintings of John Frederick Kensett, Edward Hopper and Mark Rothko.

JoAnne earned a bachelor's degree in sculpture, painting and photography from Yale University, and a doctorate from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. She has studied sculpture at the Philadelphia College of Art (now the University of the Arts), and painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where she has also taught drawing in the School of Continuing Studies.
