"Some do it with words, other with sounds. I say my piece with colors, lines and marks. For me, being a painter is the freedom to speak my own language, to synthesize stimulus, reaction, question, resolution, exploration, discovery.
I start to work, block in the main features of color and line, and then something subconscious happens. That is what I mean by my own language. Everything I've ever seen, heard, imagined, thought, is distilled into that one painting.
In still lifes I have always been able to separate actuality from imagery - in color, line and proportion. The shapes become a metaphor for reality, the colors and of the mood. I am very comfortable doing still lifes. I love exaggerating the forms, playing with the colors, giving the backgrounds excitement." -Audrey Heard
