"My goals as an artist have continued to evolve from interpretation to trying to capture and convey a sense of an experience. Influenced by Outsider Art and the Expressionists, I explore art as a means of expression. My goal is to produce work on an "internal level" (Kandinsky) with the intent to communicate a feeling to the viewer.
I have also been greatly influenced by the dynamic nature of Cape Cod and its ever-changing landscape is a recurrent theme in my paintings. Having grown up there as a child provided me with an opportunity to observe and experience both the subtle and significant changes of its environment. I was able to watch how the light impacts color and feel the weather change as it approached from the horizon. It is a place I visit often, both in work and in my life.
My creative process is broken down into two parts. First, I record into a sketchbook thoughts, images and colors, which relate to specific situations. This sketchbook/ journal is then set aside when I begin to paint. Next, I create marks of color, as intuitive responses to the experiences recorded in the journal. These energetic brushstrokes create multiple layers, that are built up into suggested imagery." - Deborah Howard
