"I think of my paintings as visual poetry, more than visual novels. I am less interested in telling a story than in conveying a kind of truth about a particular subject. A landscape or an object in space draws me in. I feel the need to convey that experience, but once inside the process, I find that it is the moment, rather a mental photograph that dictates the final piece.
Perhaps relativity plays a role here in that what may be true in a photograph, or mental image must essentially be translated into color, form, and line. What my eyes perceive is interpreted by my intellect and then transformed into what I consider a new visual truth where all the parts must play a vital role in telling the story. Color is essential. Sometimes the color is very monochromatic or even black Ñ sometimes very saturated and tropical.
Drawing is also an essential part of my painting process, not only as the underlying structure, but as part of the execution. Drawing is the most physical part for me Ñ it is indeed what sustains the tension in both the creation and the final product.
My husband, David (a pin-hole photographer) and I have spent time in Provincetown, Tuscany, the Southwest, and College Pond in Plymouth, MA. We have also visited parts of Asia and East Africa. Each place offers a different, but equally wonderful experience of light." - Carole Rollins
