Leslie Thompson's carved porcelain works are a fusion of flowing ceramic forms and crisp geometric patterns. Speaking about her surface designs, Leslie says she's been "inspired by traditional femal crafts and the diversity of images possible in combining weaving, quilting and other designs with a range of elegant pot shapes." She finds new ideas from many sources, including the work of M.C. Escher, artists of the Optical Movement and the traditional crafts of Native Americans.

The pottery is created by coating a high-fire porcelain vessel with black slip, then carved through the black, back to the original white surface while the clay is still soft. The high contrast enhances the movement and dimensionality of the designs.

Leslie Thompson's vessels are shown at 25 Commercial Street, Wellfleet
