Cheryl Rydmark, a former painter, thinks about jewelry as form, texture and symbol, instead of attempting to be a painter with metal. The "Rubato" series, named for the jazz term meaning irregular beat, is a varied grouping of elements in appreciation of an ancient jewelry style utilizing charms, beads and tubes with dangling cabochons. Influenced by the "irregular chattery line" in sculpture by Martin Puryear, and a spider web that was transformed each time water dropped on it, Rydmark uses small-sized parts, a notable aspect of her design style. Rydmark and her assistants fabricate necklaces and earrings in simple variations of the Rubato theme, alternating cabochon jewels with charms for a refined asymmetrical effect.
