Portraiture has offered me the opportunity to explore ways of marrying formalistic elements of painting with the psychological. I am in a constant experimental phase in my work, continuously discovering new ways of dealing with light, color, and form. I believe that through experimentation I will be able to express the identity rather than merely the identification of the sitter.

The relationship between the subject and the viewer has always been intriguing to me. In the realm of portraiture the viewer ceases to voyeuristically entreat his or her eyes by gazing into a scene of private or public interaction among the subjects of the painting. Instead, the viewer is obligated to face an individual. This becomes a situation filled with the scrutiny of the individual and an intimate glimpse of what the artist as a viewer must come to terms with.
