“As a studio potter, I most aspire to re-create the familiar and the useful. Expressing and highlighting contemporary urban tastes is a theme in all of my creations. At the same time I want there to be an earthiness to the shape and texture of my work that allows the fondness for the hand-crafted to come though. Most importantly, I hope my pottery refelects the love and enthusiasm I feel during its creation.”
Studio potter Dwo-Wen Chen describes his work as "undisciplined and whimsical". Born and raised in Taiwan, educated at RISD and now finds himself working in his studio in Pawtucket, Rhode Island for the past 12 years. He has incorporated both traditional and modern influence into his clay work and glazing techniques.Dwo-Wen creates his pieces through wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques. The glaze is applied carefully by brushstroke. Each piece is unique and no two pieces are identical.
Dwo-Wen Chen earned his Masters of Fine Art in Art Education at RISD Providence, Rhode Island.
